Audrey Ferrie is joining us this summer as a Construction AmeriCorps member at Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity. She will participate in construction projects essential to our mission of providing affordable housing. This role offers her practical experience relevant to her interior design studies at Iowa State University, enhancing her understanding of the building process and design elements.
Audrey will assist in home building, learn sustainable practices, and collaborate with skilled tradespeople, gaining insights into construction for her future projects. She will also work with AmeriCorps members and volunteers, building connections that support her growth.

What inspired you to serve an AmeriCorps term with Habitat for Humanity of Iowa?
I wanted to give back to other communities and feel I have made a difference! I chose to serve with AmeriCorps because I believe in their mission and I want to be a part of that!
What do you enjoy most about serving with Habitat for Humanity?
Learning something new every day! I have only been here 2 1/2 weeks and I’ve already learned so much!
What do you like most about Habitat for Humanity or your co-workers?
What I like most about Habitat for Humanity is how nice everyone is. I do not feel intimidated and feel encouraged every day to try harder. You can truly tell that members show up each day to better their community.
What is one thing you learned in the last month? Or something you hope to learn?
Something I’ve learned in the past month is how to install transition pieces, railings, replace windows, and how to build stairs
Do you have plans for after your term of service? If so, please share.
As of now, my plans are to finish my senior year of school and then go from there. I have no specific plans for afterwards.
Is this service term connected to your education or career goals? If so, can you tell us a little bit more?
Yes! One of the many reasons why I wanted to take part in this opportunity is because I am very interested in the construction world of design. I come from a strong construction background and wanted to see the hands-on work that goes into every detail. I hope to carry that into my future career.
