What inspired you to serve? or Why do you choose to serve with AmeriCorps?
I was primarily drawn to the specific Habitat for Humanity position that was needed! I think Habitat's mission as an organization is fantastic and I've had family members who worked with them. I've enjoyed construction in the past, and I was eager to learn more about it.
What do you enjoy most about serving with Habitat for Humanity?
I love working outside, feeling like I'm doing material good for people in need, and the challenge of doing something different every day.
What do you like most about Habitat for Humanity or your co-workers?
I love the casual work environment and the friendships between co-workers. Everyone is fun and fascinating to talk to.
Do you have plans for your education award? If so, what are they?
Tentatively, I plan to return to my hometown of Dayton Ohio and use my education award to help fund my pursuit of a Teacher License. Eventually, I'd love to become an English Teacher for prisons, community/senior centers, or high schools/community colleges.
Do you have plans for after your term of service?
I'll be living and working here in Iowa City for another year before moving back home.
Is this service term connected to your education or career goals? If so, can you tell us a little bit more?
I love that I'm gaining experience with supervising and educating volunteers, because it adds experience to my resume. This will help boost my career in general, but it also teaches me specific lessons that I can apply when I'm attempting to become an educator myself!
